Puttanesca – noun

A pasta sauce made with tomatoes, garlic, olives, anchovies, etc.

ORIGIN – Italian, from puttana ‘a prostitute’ (the sauce is said to have been devised by prostitutes as one which could be cooked quickly between clients’ visits)
